| VATE offers both individual and institutional membership.
Existing members can renew their membership using our online renewal system. New members should download the 2010 Membership form.
There are many reasons why you should choose to become an individual member. Individual membership offers concessional rates to pre-service teachers, first-year graduates and alumni. It also offers a range of other advantages in the form of reduced fees for activities, personal copies of publications and a range of discounts.
Institutional membership operates at different levels, according to whether the institution has (1) fewer than 1000 students, (2) more than 1000 students, (3) two campuses, (4) more than two campuses.
Member Benefits
- VATE provides a full calendar of professional development activities each year for which members receive discounted rates. Individual members receive a greater discount than institutional members.
- VATE members also belong to the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) and benefit from partnerships forged with organisations in the community.
- VATE represents members on statewide education and curriculum panels and reference groups and seeks input from members to ensure that the voices of English teachers are heard.
- Four Newsletters a year keep members up-to-date with what's happening in the profession.
- VATE publications canvass the theoretical, socio-political and pedagogical questions that invigorate members of the profession. There are three editions of Idiom and three editions of English in Australia published each year.
- VATE provides an extensive range of resources via the bookshop at the VATE office.
- Individual members are assured of receiving their own copy of the Newsletter (which includes information about upcoming PD), Idiom and English in Australia.
- The Melbourne Theatre Company and the Age Melbourne Writers' Festival are strategic partners with VATE and offer VATE individual members great discounts to their productions, events and screenings.
- Individual members also receive discounted subscriptions to Viewpoint journal and to selected cinemas in the Gippsland region.
- Full access to the member website.
Members' Lounge
You will need your Member username and password to log in to the Members' Lounge (these were sent to you when you renewed your membership or joined VATE this year). As an individual or institutional member of VATE you are invited to access these pages, to contribute to these pages and to give us ideas for what to include on these pages. You will find the latest editions of Idiom, the VATE journal, and the newsletter that is sent out each term. A range of resources prepared for the new VCE English and ESL study can be accessed in this section. Find out how to access the Wikis for English, ESL, and Literature. We hope to hear from you about what else you, as a member, need from VATE, and especially to receive any units of work or links to other resources that you have found useful.
Life membership
Life membership is awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding and long term commitment and contribution to VATE. Barry Carozzi, Jennifer Haynes, Bruce Dawe, Helen Tyrer, Helen Howells, Margaret Gill, Val Kent and Terry Hayes are people who have been honoured in this way for their services to VATE.
Prue Gill (pictured above) was awarded life membership for her services to VATE at the 2008 State Conference, 'VATE08'. |
